Mechanical
Welcome to Mechanical at UWRT!
So you’re a mechanical systems enthusiast, interested in designing, manufacturing, and assembling physical systems that meet both form and functional engineering constraints?
At UW Robotics, our projects combine this passion with a cross-functional environment—where you’ll need to consider the needs of other subteams as we develop a robotic rover capable of navigating rugged terrain and pushing the boundaries of space exploration—alongside other exciting robotic projects!
As a Mechanical member on UWRT, you will:
Analyze engineering problems and synthesize solutions
Design components and assemblies in SolidWorks
Create professional engineering drawings
Perform calculations and FEA simulations on structural components
Interact with dynamic and multi-physics simulations of complex systems
Machine and fabricate components
Get your hand dirty building cool robots!
Getting Started
Before getting started, you'll complete a short bootcamp project to learn / reaffirm your SolidWorks proficiency and gain access to our mechanical design tools.
Tools
Discord - You’ve likely started here
Confluence - You’re here. This is where team and project documentation lives.
Teams - Administration, documents and team operations
SolidWorks - CAD design software
Kenesto - This is our Product Data Management (PDM) software where CAD files are stored
Jira - Once you have completed training, you can find open tasks here
Altium Codesigner - Tool for collaborating with electrical
Ansys - FEA modelling software, niche application for specific tasks
Bambu Studio - 3D printer access for rapid prototyping
DM a Mechanical lead to gain access to these tools as applicable.
Onboarding
Completing the mechanical onboarding is required to officially become a member of the team.
The current onboarding is an engaging task that involves modeling components in Solidworks, sourcing off-the-shelf (OTS) components, creating part and assembly drawings, and organizing a project folder. The task is to design the Rev 1 SAR 2023 end effector.
